This rare folio is composed of 15 lines of the Quran, in Arabic, on parchment. It was probably created in the 9th century in northern Africa. Calligraphy was an important Arabic art form, seen on ceramics, coins and manuscripts. The highly angular horizontal Kufic seen here was the primary script used in the earliest copies of the Quran from the 7th through the 10th centuries. Diacritical marks indicated by red dots are guides to pronunciation.
